The Bank was chartered in Paris on March 15,1913 primarily for the purposes of financing industrial and railway expansion in China. The bank obtained contracts for constructing the Pukow Harbor, a 1,000 mile railroad in Southern China and tramways in Peking. The bank operated branches in a number of nations and was authorized to issue banknotes within China. Following bankruptcy in 1921, the bank was recapitalized with the support of the Chinese Government in 1925 and later was the first foreign bank authorized to conduct business with the People's Republic of China.
